Description
Hello everybody! In this video, I'm reviewing the Competitive Keyword Analysis tool on SEO Workflows.
Here's a breakdown of the content:
Introduction
- This tool helps you understand opportunity areas for a client website at scale.
- It's fundamentally a gap analysis tool but offers a much deeper insight than what you'd get from a standard gap analysis export from tools like SEMRush.
- To use this tool, you need SEMrush data sets - specifically those that you'd export from here: https://www.semrush.com/analytics/organic/positions/
Demonstration
- I showcase the scale at which this tool can operate. For the sake of demonstration, I use a hypothetical client and select various other websites as competitors.
- The tool allows for the input of multiple files, accommodating large data sets. For instance, if you have a 50,000-row limit for an export from SEMrush, you can input multiple files to capture the entire keyword universe.
- I apply a volume exclusion filter to focus on keywords with a search volume greater than 500, given the large size of the websites in the example.
- After inputting the data, the tool processes it, and I then explore the output.
Analysis
- The output provides a page gaps view, which looks at page-level gaps. It shows the competitor's URL and indicates the overlap with the client's keywords.
- Another view provides a keyword-level gap analysis, showing the keyword, its search volume, the competitor's position, the client's position, and other relevant data.
- There's also a grouping view that clusters data based on certain criteria, such as keywords present in URLs. This helps in identifying clusters of opportunity.
- I emphasize that when considering opportunities, it's more about the pages you need to build rather than individual keywords. The focus should be on the potential traffic these new pages can drive.
Practical Use
- Using the data, I demonstrate how to quickly identify opportunities. For instance, if there's no overlap in keyword rankings between the client and a competitor for a particular page, it's a clear opportunity.
- I also discuss how to interpret different levels of overlap. For example, if there's a 50% or higher overlap, it indicates that the client likely has a well-aligned page for that keyword cluster. A lower overlap suggests less alignment and potential for improvement.
Conclusion
The tool offers a comprehensive view of keyword opportunities and can guide SEO strategies effectively.
There are numerous ways to use this data, and I've only touched on a few common use cases.
